Charles Addams

Mother nature has recently broken the back of the summer-long drought inflicted on Austin and surrounding areas. Last night there was a particularly violent thunderstorm, with lots of thunder and lightning.

Around 4:30AM I decided it was not worth trying to get back to sleep and spent some time enjoying the cool temperatures and the light show.

Later in the day, while cleaning, I ran across a book I remember poring over endlessly as a child. A hardback version of Charles Addams Homebodies (First edition, third printing, 1954).

Mr. Addams was one of the precursors to the likes of Gahan Wilson and Gary Larson. His cartoons, published in the New Yorker and others provided the seed material for the 60’s TV sitcom The Addams Family. and a couple of movies.

I always thought his cartoons were much better than any of the dramatic versions. He defined Macabre humor during the mid-twentieth century.

Just the kind of day that makes you feel good to be alive!

Of course the art retains it’s original copyright. So if you know someone with a somewhat odd sense of humor. You would be hard-pressed to do much better than a collection of some classic Charles Addams.
