Barf on the Wall

23 Apr

About 4 years ago I bought a house. The couple I bought it from bought it new in 1983.

You remember the 80s. Specifically the home design fashions that were common in the 80s. Stained oak cabinets, formica counters, pink composite countertops with shell shaped sinks molded right into the cabinets. And then there is wallpaper. Even the conservative stuff was pretty damn ugly.

To make matters worse the lady who “decorated” this place was into “country” …shudder.

There was (and, unfortunately still is) a lot of floral wallpaper on the walls in my home. The worst of the lot was the border around the ceiling in the master bedroom and the florist’s dumpster that was the bathroom.

My first project: take down that wallpaper and re-paint the bathroom. A year or two later the master bedroom and it’s floral border.

The stained oak cabinets were not bad but had darkened over the years and were stained with ground-in dirt from 25-plus years of use. And since throwing them all away for new stuff was not in the budget I am finally getting around to the sanding, priming, sanding, more priming, painting, painting and more painting to clean up the cabinets and brighten up the room.

On either side of the cabinets there was some cove moulding that was easier to remove and paint separately than to do so in-place. When I popped them off this was underneath:

Hideous 80s Wallpaper

This was not the wallpaper I peeled off the walls 3 years ago.

I have one thing to say to the husband of the woman who “decorated” this place. You must have loved her an awful lot.
